WSP, BLÜCHER® EuroPipe and the new Silverburn Shopping Centre

With Scotland’s retail market estimated to be worth in excess of £26bn by 2010 and Glasgow only surpassed by London in the shopping stakes, it seams a good choice to build the new Silverburn Shopping Centre on a 75-acre site south of the City by developers Retail Property Holdings. The project will include a £50m supermarket and will be 3 times larger than the existing Pollock Shopping Centre.

WSP Buildings are the mechanical consultant and specified BLUCHER® EuroPipe for the soil and vent system for the £100m project due for completion in 2009.

We asked Peter Lowe, Associate of WSP what influenced their decision to specify BLÜCHER® EuroPipe:

“Silverburn Shopping Centre, Pollock was a particularly interesting and challenging rainwater and soil vent pipe project. We had to design a system, which was both flexible in nature, and robust in operation to meet the continually changing nature of the retail sector. The BLUCHER product brought with it many beneficial qualities over is competitors including its speed of installation and its robust, adaptive construction.” “The project programme was extremely tight and required a system, which could be readily installed without the use of complex tooling or large quantities of labour. This together with the corrosion resistant, highly durable material and aesthetically pleasing pipework, which in many cases is visible, made the BLUCHER system the obvious choice. “

Peter Hardiman MD of BLUCHER UK explains how BLÜCHER® EuroPipe can offer the benefits stated above.

“Perhaps the simplest benefit of BLÜCHER® EuroPipe to explain is its corrosion resistance and durable characteristics because of the inherent qualities of stainless steel.” “Its speed of installation comes not only from its spigot and socket push-fit joints but the fact that it is so light in comparison to other metallic systems on the market. This means that fewer people are needed to install the BLÜCHER® EuroPipe system in comparison to Cast Iron, and an independent study conducted by BSRIA concluded that it was 39% quicker to install.”

Other benefits can be seen from the installation of the BLÜCHER® EuroPipe system. Health and safety risks are reduced when compared to other materials not only due to it being lightweight, but also because cutting and jointing neither produces sparks nor fumes. Whole Life costs are excellent when compared to the major alternatives including plastics and Cast Iron, and recent tests have confirmed that BLÜCHER® EuroPipe meets the European noise standards.

Overall BLÜCHER® EuroPipe is the ideal system for soil, waste and rainwater applications.
